Want a brighter, fresher-looking smile?
Over time, teeth can become darker or stained from everyday things such as tea, coffee, red wine, smoking and natural ageing. Professional teeth whitening is a simple cosmetic treatment designed to lighten the colour of your natural teeth and give your smile a brighter appearance.
At Toddington Dental Surgery, your whitening treatment is professionally supervised and tailored to you. Before starting, we will assess your teeth and gums to make sure whitening is appropriate for you and discuss what you would like to achieve.
Why choose professional teeth whitening?
Having your whitening treatment through a dental practice means that your mouth can be assessed before treatment and your whitening can be prescribed specifically for you. The GDC states that tooth whitening should only be undertaken following an appropriate assessment by a registered dentist and on a dentist's prescription. The whitening gel is used at a carefully controlled, evidence-based concentration to provide effective whitening while prioritising patient safety.
With professional whitening you benefit from custom-made trays, professional guidance, a personalised treatment plan and support from your dental team throughout the process. Additionally, the concentration of the whitening gel is used at a safe and evidence based level.

How does teeth whitening work?
Our whitening treatment uses custom-made trays designed specifically to fit your teeth, together with professional whitening gel prescribed by your dentist.
Your treatment usually involves:
1Your first appointment – consultation & impressions
We will examine your teeth and gums, discuss the result you are hoping to achieve and make sure whitening is suitable for you. We will then take impressions or scans so your personalised whitening trays can be made.
2Your second appointment – receive your whitening kit
Once your trays are ready, we will check that they fit correctly and provide your whitening gel. We will show you exactly how to use the trays, how much gel to apply and how often they should be worn.
3Whiten your teeth at home
You can then gradually whiten your teeth from the comfort of your own home, following the instructions given by your dental team. Dentist-prescribed home whitening is normally carried out over a period of several weeks rather than trying to achieve the result all at once.
4Review your progress
Further appointments can be arranged so we can monitor your whitening, discuss your results and answer any questions you may have.
Your questions, answered
Will my teeth look unnaturally white?
Our aim is not to give everybody exactly the same shade. Whitening is tailored to your teeth, your starting shade and the result you would like to achieve. We can discuss your expectations with you before treatment so that you can decide whether whitening is right for your smile.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity, particularly to cold foods and drinks, while whitening. These effects are usually temporary, and your dental team can advise you about managing sensitivity if it occurs.
Does whitening work on crowns, fillings or implants?
Whitening products lighten natural tooth structure. They do not change the colour of restorations such as crowns, dentures or dental implants. If you have restorations that are visible when you smile, we can discuss this with you before whitening and help you plan the most appropriate approach.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Whitening is not permanent because teeth can gradually become stained again through diet and lifestyle. Your dentist can advise you on maintaining your result and whether occasional top-up whitening may be appropriate for you. Simple measures such as good oral hygiene and moderating strongly staining foods and drinks can also help maintain your brighter smile.
